Take on a classic road trip

For most Victorians, Cup Day marks the start of an easy downhill slide towards Christmas and the end of the year. Why not get a taste of the summer holidays with a classic beach road trip? Whether you choose the Bellarine or Mornington Peninsula, you’ll find beautiful beaches, cute small town cafes and top notch ice cream shops. If Torquay isn’t far enough from the city for you, make the drive out to Phillip Island where you’ll get all the above plus penguins.

Have a one-day mini escape

The Monday before Cup Day isn’t technically a holiday, and some unfortunate souls still have to front up to work in the middle of everyone else’s four-day weekend. If this is you, never fear! Just because you live in the city doesn't mean you can't get away for a day. There are plenty of great places within day tripping distance of Melbourne that are well worth a visit. Try the Dandenongs for great pies and ye olde lolly shops, or head to Kyneton and Woodend where you can visit the Holgate Brewhouse for a tasting paddle, or have your own picnic at Hanging Rock.

Enjoy a kid-friendly staycation

You don’t need to leave Melbourne to have a fun-filled family holiday. The extra long weekend is the perfect opportunity to hit up some of your favourite kiddy hot spots, and visit some slightly further afield. The Collingwood Children’s Farm, Melbourne Zoo, Melbourne Museum and Scienceworks are all open for the whole weekend. Head west to visit the Werribee Open Range Zoo and experience an African safari. Keep going towards Geelong and you’ll find Fairy Park in Anakie: every fairytale lover’s best day out. For something more hair raising try Luna Park in St Kilda or Funfields in Whittlesea.

Lace up your hiking boots

Make the most of the spring weather with one of the many stunning walks in Victoria. Pinnacle Lookout walk in the Grampians can be challenging but you’ll be rewarded with amazing views across the east of the state. Head to the Cathedral Ranges in the Yarra Valley where you can take your pick of 15 walking tracks, each as beautiful as the last. If you’re really keen and have some annual leave up your sleeve, try the Great Ocean Road walk. This eight-day hike goes from Apollo Bay to the Twelve Apostles and features rugged coastline and stunning beaches at every turn.
